The Streets of Berlin
Berlin – New Hampshire, not Germany 🙂 An interesting town north of the White Mountains. Very industrial. A lot of paper, pulp, and chemicals have been produced here. Also the home to the first casserole, who knew?!
It lies along the Androscoggin River (we love our long river names in NH), which speaking of, has TEN hydroelectric damns! As with many towns in New England, Berlin had a massive boom up until the stock market crash in the early 1900’s. After that, it fell into decline and never really experienced another boom or uplift. There are a lot of issues today, but the town has been trying to change that, by 1 – building a huge ATV park and 2 – a new federal prison.
Walking around the downtown, its very quiet. A lot of buildings are empty and in need in repair. Another thing, it smells a lot of times… It’s hard to attract people to live in a cold place that has a ton of industrial junk around that stinks up the air.
However, it’s in one of the most beautiful settings I’ve seen in New Hampshire. The town has an incredible view of Mount Washington. The river it lies on is wide and gorgeous (albeit polluted). It’s the perfect place to have a small mountain town that attracts people to hike, ski, bike, walk, explore the mountains, in an environmentally friendly way. It does this already, but not to the level of North Conway or Lincoln. Not that I’m saying I would like to to become either of those places, because they are extremely touristy. Just that if the mills, damns, pipelines were removed from near the town and people were interested in creating a beautiful, sustainable, but not expensive community, it could have that boom again. It has a lot of potential.
We saw some cool places in town that surprised me, to be honest. They had an inviting “internet cafe”, a work-studio-center (a public space to create), and a store called “Middle Earth”. It has the feeling of the beginning of a renewal. I actually loved the town. It has not become gentrified, which is something that I hate to see.

Do you think Frodo is in there?!
